Market Repositioning: Providing Computationally Efficient AI Solutions to SMEs and Large Enterprises
Founded in 2016, Argo Vision emerged with the mission to bring the benefits of artificial intelligence, particularly computer vision, to businesses that couldn’t afford to maintain an in-house R&D team. Alessandro Ferrari, co-founder and CEO, recognized early on that deep learning would revolutionize the way AI problems were tackled. His insight into the field allowed him to establish Argo with a clear focus: to offer computationally efficient, yet robust AI solutions.
In its early days, Argo encountered a rapidly changing market. The initial offering seemed almost outdated due to the accelerated pace of AI advancements. Rather than sticking to their original path, the team changed quickly to integrate deep learning, becoming early adopters and specialists in this cutting-edge field.
Their competitive advantage came from combining pre-neural computer vision techniques with emerging neural methodologies. This unique blend gave them the flexibility to offer solutions that were not only high in quality but also cost-effective in terms of computational resources.
This growth strategy allowed Argo to gain a foothold in the market by positioning itself as a “white label” AI provider, working with various partners to bring their advanced solutions to industries ranging from manufacturing to automotive. By the time they were acquired by the Marchesini Group in 2020, Argo had successfully established itself as a leading AI R&D firm with a growing reputation.

Alessandro Ferrari, Co-founder of Argo: Balancing Scientific Expertise with Business Acumen
With a background in research and computer vision, Alessandro transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship when he realized the profound impact deep learning would have on his field. “In 2015, I saw how people who were new to the sector were publishing groundbreaking papers that outperformed everything we had been doing for over a decade. That’s when I knew AI was about to change everything.”
Alessandro’s path was anything but conventional. Rather than seeking immediate funding or building a senior executive team, he chose to bootstrap the business and focus on acquiring niche expertise. He believes in building a team from the ground up, emphasizing the value of hiring passionate juniors straight out of university and nurturing their growth through challenging, hands-on projects.
This approach paid off. When the Marchesini Group approached them for acquisition, Alessandro knew that they had created something truly valuable—a team of talented individuals deeply embedded in the latest AI trends and a portfolio of cutting-edge solutions
“However, that recklessness to make bold, unconventional choices is what sets you apart, as we did. While the whole world is using open libraries and public technologies, focusing on product startups, we chose a different path—technology startups with proprietary tech, and we didn’t raise capital. Otherwise, you get stuck in a system where you’re always at the back of the line. You have to find more "ninja" strategies to stand out.”

🗝️Founder Tips
Alessandro Ferrari’s Tip of the Week: Don’t Chase Trends—Stay Deeply Engaged in Your Field
For Alessandro, the best ideas don’t come from jumping on trends, but from consistent, in-depth immersion in a particular sector. "Before founding Argo, I wanted to excel in the tech world. Every day, as soon as I woke up, I would read the latest research papers on artificial intelligence. At the time, there were only a few papers, so I could easily keep up, summarizing what I found interesting and posting it daily."
This daily habit not only helped Alessandro stay at the forefront of AI advancements but also led him to share his insights with a growing community. As he consistently highlighted what he found interesting in AI research, his audience steadily expanded, eventually surpassing 70,000 followers.
Over time, as the volume of research exploded, with thousands of new papers being published, the purpose of this habit evolved. While it began as a way to excel in his field, it has now become a method for staying sharp and cutting through the overwhelming noise. Despite this shift, Alessandro's commitment to staying informed remains an essential part of his routine.
Today, while he doesn’t always have the time to dive deep into every new finding, he still reviews what’s important and passes it on to his AI team. This constant engagement with the latest developments gives Argo a significant competitive edge. Alessandro advises founders to do the same: immerse yourself in your sector and stay updated. "The insights you gain will give you a clearer perspective on what really matters, allowing you to build innovative solutions instead of following the crowd."

Argo’s Strategy: Bootstrapping and Building Tailored Solutions
As Argo expanded, they consistently adhered to their foundational principles of efficiency, flexibility, and control.
Rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions, which often come with limitations, they made a deliberate choice to develop proprietary systems. This allowed them to maintain complete control over their technology stack, ensuring that they could adapt quickly to client’s unique needs while optimizing performance.
By building these custom solutions in-house, Argo not only ensured that their products were finely tuned to the specific challenges at hand but also avoided the hefty costs associated with external infrastructure and third-party technologies. This lean, resourceful approach proved to be a key competitive advantage, enabling Argo to deliver cutting-edge, high-quality AI solutions while remaining agile and cost-effective—a strategy that aligned perfectly with their mission to serve both small and large enterprises alike, without the burden of external capital.

Embracing Challenges as Opportunities for Growth
At first, Alessandro struggled to navigate the commercial side of running a startup. He often felt out of his depth during negotiations and business meetings. However, over time, he discovered that these challenges were actually opportunities to grow in unexpected ways. “I realized that learning the business side was not a distraction from my technical passion, but a chance to expand my impact,” he shares. As he embraced this new role, Alessandro found himself enjoying the strategic and interpersonal aspects of leading a company, seeing them as an extension of his ability to solve problems and drive innovation.
“The founder’s ego often gets in the way. You tend to centralize all responsibilities, but over time, you learn to delegate and respect other people’s roles.”
This journey taught him to view his leadership role not as a diversion from his technical interests but as a chance to make a broader impact.
